National Treasure Takaoka-zan Zuiryuji Temple

This famous temple of the Soto Buddhist sect was known as the family temple of Toshinaga Maeda, the second feudal lord of Kaga Domain and founder of Takaoka. Erected by the third lord in memory of his late brother, the temple took about 20 years to construct.
The main buildings—Somon Gate, Sanmon Gate, Buddha Hall, and Hatto (Dharma) Hall) —were constructed in a straight line, while the Zen Meditation Hall and the living quarters are arranged symmetrically to its left and right. Corridors connect and delimitate the spaces between various halls, creating a magnificent classic Zen temple layout. As masterpeices of early modern Zen-style architecture, the Sanmon Gate, Buddha Hall, and Dharma Hall are designated National Treasures - the only monuments of such exalted status in Toyama Prefecture.
