Inami

Come and wander through the old streets of Japan's best wood-carving town: Inami.
Inami is located at the southern end of the Tonami Plain, and is one of the "sankyoson" scattered settlements that the Tonami Plain is famous for.
The city sits at the foot of Mt. Yaotome and is steeped in rich history and culture. ln 1390 (the 1st year of the Meitoku period), Hongan-ji Temple's 5th head priest Shaknyo erected Zuisen-ji Temple in this region, after which Inami came to flourish as a temple town.

Pick up

Numerous woodcarving workshops line the atmospheric stone-paved streets of Yokamachi-dori street, where the clack of wooden mallets resounds. Woodcarvings can be found all over, from the phone booths to the bus stops, filling the town with an artistic air. People often come to drop by one of the many woodcarving workshops or Zuisen-ji Temple, which is the origin of Inamiʼs 250-year-old woodcarving techniques, to experience the town’s traditional craftsmanship. The nearby Shogawa River sightseeing cruise also offers spectacular views of the region’s seasonal landscapes.
