Amaharashi Coast

The Amaharashi Coast, previously referred to as “Shibutani Beach" in the oldest anthology of Japanese poems, is designated as one of Japans' Best 100 Beaches for its picturesque view of rocks, white sand, and green pines. On a clear day, you can see the snow-covered Tateyama mountain range rising 3,000 meters high over Toyama Bay. It is said that back in 1187, a renowned Japanese warrior named Minamoto no Yoshitsune was trapped in heavy showers on his way to Oshu, so he waited under a rock for the rainstorm to end. The name "Amaharashi" (lit. rain clearing) is derived from this legend, and the rock under which he took shelter is known as "Yoshitusne Rock" today.
Surfboard and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) rentals are available at "Wave Lunch" near Amaharashi & Matsudae Beach. Enjoy the ocean to your heart’s content!
