Doburoku Festival

The end of September, when the mountains become colored with the leaves of autumn, and the fields are harvested, to mid-October. Known as a supremely strange festival, the Doburoku Festival is held in the village of Shirakawa-go as a grand celebration of the abundant fall harvest, prosperity in the home, and to pray for peace in the village. A procession is held beginning at around 3:30 p.m., and the unrefined sake (“doburoku”) prepared that year is offered to the gods, and is also enjoyed by the festival participants and visitors from far and wide.
